REPLAY: Recyled sports gear making a difference in Taranaki
What is REPLAY?
A sporty recycling project is giving gear new life in Taranaki. The REPLAY initiative, started by Manawatū mum of two Denise McLean in 2017, is a community project allows for the collection and redistribution of new and used sports gear to kids and families who do not have easy access to it.
The REPLAY initiative supports local tamariki and rangatahi in providing opportunities to be active, happy and healthy whilst giving the environment a hand at the same time. There have been over 32,680 items of sports gear distributed by the REPLAY initiatives participating regions since it started and over 3000 sports gear items have been donated and reused in Taranaki.
How does it work in Taranaki?
Sport Taranaki administers it and it is supported in the region by Waste Management. The system is simple, with specially marked bins placed in easy to reach areas like sports hubs, schools or shops.
Once bins start to fill up with sports gear, we collect, clean and sort the gear then hand it back out to those that need it.
Why does REPLAY work so well?
Kids often outgrow their sports gear, which then clutters the house or ends up in landfill. A lack of gear can really hold some kids back which is why REPLAY is a brilliant solution. It is a community led project that gets the right gear to the people who will really benefit from it. REPLAY solves that issue for people, while making sure the gear is put to good use. It’s a win for the people and the environment too.
Why are Waste Management involved?
Waste Management Regional Manager – Taranaki/Manawatū Peter Grennell said the scheme was a natural one for the company to support in Taranaki with the donation of 10 bins. “We are keen to help the community recycle as much as possible in all different ways and we are happy to be part of such a great initiative.”
