Runners and walkers roamed the rural trails of Stratford at the TET Taranaki Masters Games on Thursday to mark the start of a big few days of sporting action.
A field of 53 runners and walkers tackled a varied rural 5km and 10km course hosted on the home turf of the Stratford Runners & Walkers Club. Competitors from across Taranaki and some from further afield enjoyed being tested by steady rain and some varied terrain and Stratford's marshalls were there with umbrellas and plenty of friendly support.
Deborah Wilson, of New Plymouth, who had entered the walk, said that walking was part of her active recovery from a heart attack about 18 months ago, which came out of the blue.
She had gradually been recovering her fitness since then and walking was also great for her state of mind.
“If it’s safe, then getting out there is all good for health. Exercise is good for the soul – if you can do it you should get out there.”
“I’m just really pleased about the Masters coming back on board…I think it’s awesome,” she said.
Organiser Tracey O’Sullivan said the Games was a great opportunity to build another event into the local running calendar and the club were considering adding a half marathon into the programme in future.
